a representation of the leaf of the maple tree, long used as an emblem of Canada.
- 1860  The Mayflower . . . I am told is the emblem of Nova Scotia, as the the Maple leaf is to Canada.
- 1930  During the war of 1812-14, the scarlet jacket of Canadian and British soldiers made a perfect target for the enemies. Therefore, when fighting in the woods, each soldier cut slips in his blouse and inserted a twig of maple leaves to bluff the enemy. This was the first time that the maple leaf had been specifically identified with Canadians or with Canada.
- 1964  A single maple leaf on a white field flanked by red bars will be recommended to the House of Commons today as Canada's new flag.
